System & Network Engineer

Our client, a well-established organisation located in the heart of Brussels, just a short walk from Brussels Central Station, is looking for a System & Network Engineer to strengthen its Infrastructure team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an infrastructure professional who enjoys combining project work with operational responsibilities. Approximately 70% of your time will be dedicated to infrastructure projects, while the remaining 30% will focus on maintaining and supporting the existing environment.

About the role

You'll join a close-knit Infrastructure team consisting of four engineers and a Team Leader. Working in a relatively small team means you'll enjoy a broad technical scope and be involved in a wide variety of infrastructure initiatives.

The organisation is currently completing an important infrastructure transformation. While the core hardware infrastructure is gradually being centralised at national level, the local team remains responsible for the software layer, server environments, deployments, automation and continuous improvement.

This is therefore a role where you'll help shape the future infrastructure while ensuring business
continuity.

What you'll do

Approximately 70% Project Work

You'll actively contribute to the evolution of the infrastructure landscape by participating in projects such as:

  • Infrastructure automation initiatives

  • Windows 11 deployment and workstation standardisation

  • Server clustering and high-availability projects

  • Automation through scripting

  • SharePoint-related projects

  • Automating employee onboarding processes

  • Continuous improvement of the server and virtualisation environment

  • Deployment of new infrastructure components and software packages

  • Creating technical documentation and sharing knowledge within the IT team

You'll work closely with your colleagues to identify opportunities for automation, improve existing processes and modernise the infrastructure environment.

Approximately 30% Operational Activities

Alongside project work, you'll also help ensure the stability and performance of the infrastructure by handling:

  • 2nd and 3rd line infrastructure support

  • Windows Server administration

  • Basic Linux administration

  • Server patching and lifecycle management

  • Virtual machine management

  • Backup administration

  • Windows 11 image and MSI package deployment

  • Database administration

  • Network monitoring and troubleshooting

  • Core switch monitoring and incident resolution

  • Technical documentation

  • Supporting and training the Helpdesk whenever new technologies or major changes are introduced

Who we're looking for

We're looking for a versatile infrastructure engineer rather than a pure networking specialist.

Both medior and senior profiles are welcome. Ideally, you have around five years of relevant experience, although candidates with approximately two to three years of solid infrastructure experience and a strong willingness to learn will also be considered.

You'll have experience with most of the following:

  • Windows Server administration

  • Basic to intermediate Linux administration

  • Virtualisation and server management

  • Patch management and software deployments

  • Backup solutions

  • Database administration

  • Switching, network monitoring and troubleshooting

  • Scripting or infrastructure automation (PHP is a plus)

  • Docker and/or JBoss is considered an advantage

Languages

  • Fluency in French or Dutch, with at least a good understanding of the other national language.

What you'll enjoy

Besides an exciting and technically diverse role, you'll benefit from an excellent work-life balance and a supportive working environment, including:

  • Up to three days of home working per week

  • A 35-hour working week

  • Friday afternoons off

  • A collaborative team where you'll have real ownership and visibility

  • A healthy balance between project work and operational responsibilities

If you're looking for a role where you can combine hands-on infrastructure expertise with meaningful projects in a stable organisation that values innovation, collaboration and work-life balance, we'd be delighted to hear from you.
